Business Continuity at 2ndQuadrant – How We Remain Effective in Emergencies

March 10, 2020/0 Comments/in 2ndQuadrant, Business, Featured /by Umair Shahid

Ensuring high availability for our clients’ PostgreSQL databases is our primary business objective. We are able to achieve that by ensuring availability of our PostgreSQL experts round the clock and around the world. Just like we plan failover and switchover contingencies for our clients, we plan for backups and backups-of-backups for business continuity so our services are delivered unhindered.

With over 15 years experience of being able to work remotely, our staff has always been prepared to remain effective in the face of emergencies like COVID-19.

2ndQuadrant is a globally distributed business with staff members in more than 23 countries around the world. We have presence in every continent (ok, we’re not in Antarctica – do you know how hard it is to recruit penguins?!). From the start, we have designed our Production Support network such that a major disaster in any part of the world does not impact our ability to deliver the same quality of service to our customers.

So, what happens when an emergency hits multiple parts of the world? Well, just like we have a contingency plan by distributing our staff, we have procedures in place to give our staff the ability to work independently. Each staff member is fully equipped to work from an alternate location – basically, any place that has Internet access. The access is made secure using VPN. We also take stringent measures to periodically audit staff equipment for security, thus enabling them to work remotely, even if their part of the world happens to be under quarantine.

Because we are a global operation with executive leadership in 4 continents, we have trained all staff members to use tools that aid productivity while working with global teams. We are accustomed to virtual meetings and, over a period of many years, we have refined the platforms we use for such meetings. Our internal communications use secure channels from trusted providers and industry standard information security protocols.

All in all, we have been preparing for emergencies since 2ndQuadrant was founded. As experts in Business Continuity, we know how to do this for our clients and for ourselves.
